Dubai History

DUBAI HISTORY

Archaeologists believe that people have been living in this region since around 3000BC, and evidence links the area to ancient Egypt, Greece and far beyond. In 1833 the Bani Yas moved into Dubai headed by Sheik Maktoum Bin Butti who became the original member of the Al Maktoum family, who still rule Dubai to the present day. A formal trading agreement with the British government was set up in 1892 which permitted a full tax exemption to all foreign traders which you will be pleased to know continues to this present day.

Dubai and its people remain firmly conscious to their culture and understand that no matter how quickly the country evolves the people remember where they came from. Everyone in the UAE is proud of their past and look to the future with open eyes. They are a very hospitable country and take pride in traditions and many religious ceremonies throughout the year. Should you visit Dubai you will be amazed at how friendly everyone is and how tolerant they are in relation to other cultures.


Religion and Languages

Islam is the official religion of the UAE. However other religions are respected there are also two Catholic churches, one Anglican and one Protestant church plus a Hindu temple. The language of the country is Arabic, although English is spoken in all shops, restaurants and hotels.

ECONOMY

The UAE has a population of nearly 4million. After the late 1960s oil was crucial to the development of Dubai, however the non-oil sector now contributes just under 90% of the total GDP. The economy is open and has one of the worlds highest capita incomes, estimated at over $21,000 per person.
